The 2025 Iowa High School Wrestling State Duals concluded on February 8 at Xtream Arena in Coralville, with thrilling matches and historic victories across all three classes. Southeast Polk, Algona, and Don Bosco emerged as champions in Class 3A, 2A, and 1A, respectively, showcasing the depth and talent of Iowa’s wrestling programs.

Southeast Polk continued its wrestling dynasty, securing its second consecutive Class 3A title with a commanding 54-14 victory over Indianola in the finals. The Rams dominated from the start, building a 35-0 lead after the first six matches and securing bonus points in nine of their 11 wins. Standout performances included pins from Kyler Sallis (285 lbs) and Hayden Schwab (120 lbs), as well as a technical fall by Kaiden Belinsky (106 lbs). Southeast Polk’s journey to the finals included a 65-8 quarterfinal win over North Scott and a 58-6 semifinal rout of Waukee Northwest, solidifying their status as one of the nation’s top high school wrestling teams.

Class 2A: Algona Edges West Delaware

In a tightly contested Class 2A final, Algona claimed its first-ever State Duals title with a 29-25 victory over West Delaware. The Bulldogs relied on key wins from Thomas Zabka (113 lbs), Brooks Morgan (120 lbs), and Ashton Moreno (150 lbs) to build an early lead. Despite a late surge from West Delaware, including bonus-point victories from Brent Yonkovic (190 lbs) and Jeryn Funke (215 lbs), Algona held on to secure the championship. West Delaware, known as the “Cardiac Hawks” for their nail-biting victories, had advanced to the finals with dramatic wins over Clarion-Goldfield-Dows and Winterset.

Class 1A: Don Bosco’s Fifth Straight Title

Don Bosco extended its historic streak, capturing its fifth consecutive Class 1A championship in a dramatic 38-37 win over Alburnett. The match came down to strategic lineup adjustments and a critical forfeit by Alburnett, which sealed the victory for the Dons. Key performances included Ethan Christoffer’s 19-1 technical fall at 165 lbs and Kyler Knaack’s forfeit win at 175 lbs. Alburnett, despite the loss, showcased its depth with wins from Owen Henriksen (126 lbs) and Reece Klostermann (157 lbs). Don Bosco’s victory marked their 15th duals title, further cementing their legacy in Iowa wrestling.

Historic Milestones and Highlights

The tournament also celebrated significant milestones, including Independence coach Michael Doyle’s 500th career dual victory, making him the 12th coach in Iowa history to achieve this feat. Doyle’s Mustangs finished fifth in Class 2A, adding to his storied career.
